A New Start
By Tom D Blakely
The kids will soon be back at school
This holiday was a short one.
All the things I’d looked forward to
Are gone, or didn’t happen.
We had a few good times I think
As far as I remember, (being mostly drunk)
But nothing much to talk about
Just like our dismal weather.
There’s nothing to look forward to
Until we get to summer. . .
There must be more to life than this
Or were we born to suffer?
There’s something in the church I know
But is it just the building?
Or is it in the crowd I meet
This strangely cheerful gathering?
One smiling here, one smiling there
Why is she always happy?
And nothing seems to get him down
Not even his meagre salary?
I hear the gospel message preached
But I don’t get the plot?
Why celebrate the death of Christ
Was He not the Son of God?
Christ died for sin, then rose again
What’s that to do with me?
I sat there feeling all alone
And as guilty as can be.
Just then in church God spoke to me
His love warmed my cold heart.
And drawn to Jesus at the cross
I found peace and a new start!
‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!’
[2 Corinthians 5:17]
