To & Fro

To & Fro
By Tom D Blakely

O Satan you’ve surpassed yourself
Your presence knows no bounds,
That even at God’s mercy seat
Your distracting thoughts are found!

For in communion with my God
I thought that I was safe,
Until you claimed a pact with God
In a way that defies belief!

Satan quoted scriptures to me Lord
How he asked and You agreed,
To torment poor Job to such extent
That he nearly did succeed.

The more I try, the more I fail
Lord I’m no match on my own.
The devil’s wiles I thought I knew
But confess that I was wrong.

No better target could he strike
Than our meeting place with God,
For there God thwarts his hellspun plans
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In prayer I provoked Satan’s wrath
Thinking I had lost the fight,
But I am blessed for he was beat
When God put him to flight.

To prayer again Lord, I return
To always seek Your face,
Knowing all powers in heaven and earth
Exist but by Your grace.

‘And the LORD said unto Satan, From where do you come?
So Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro on the earth,
and from walking up and down in it.’
[Job 1:7]
