When Self Dies

When Self Dies
By Tom D Blakely

‘Born again, but who would know it?’
Will this be my epitaph?
‘Every work he did was useless,
Satan had the final laugh.’

Did God visit me in blessing
Have I ever died to self?
Buried with the Lord in baptism
Into death to live new life?

Who would wish for self-destruction?
Self is strong and will fight back.
Holding out on God is natural
But God’s blessing we will lack!

Some say all comes with salvation
Sent from God and effort free.
As we read about God’s people
Such a different life we see…

When they prayed the place was shaken
As the Spirit filled each soul.
Everywhere God’s power was present
Helping them to preach so bold!

Fill us with Your Holy Spirit
Lord we pray, alight our souls!
May we live in You forever
Seeking no more worldly goals.

Satan go! The Lord rebuke you!
I fear God and nothing else.
Christ I trust for He is faithful
‘Self’ I leave beneath the cross.

When I pray the Spirit lifts me
Into God’s most holy realms.
When dismissed my Saviour tells me:
‘When self dies new life begins.’

‘Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.’
[Romans 6:4]
