A New Birth
By Marie C Neubauer
The rich young ruler knelt down at Jesus feet,
Did he really know who it was he did greet?
He called Him ‘Good Master’ and this set the tone,
For Jesus answered “No one is good but God alone”,
This very rich man asks Jesus what he must do,
For he wanted the inheritance of eternal life too!
Then Jesus said, “You know the commandments,
Do not bear false witness…honor your parents,
Do not commit adultery…do not kill.do not steal”,
“I’ve obeyed these from my youth up”, he revealed,
Then Jesus said, “Yet you lack one thing more,
Sell all that you have, and distribute to the poor”!
You’ll have treasure in Heaven for eternity
And then I want you to come and follow me,
The ruler walked away…sorrowful and sad,
For he coveted greatly the riches he had,
From the one true God he had turned away,
Mammon, the Master, he would serve and obey!
Jesus warned us what would be our fate,
Try to serve two Masters, and one you will hate,
He said worldly treasures would rust and decay,
And all of our wealth may soon vanish away,
The foolish lust after things of this earth,
The wise follow Jesus and receive a new birth!
“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”
