What is good works all about?
Why do you ask?
I was at the big church in town on Saturday and saw a lot of important people collecting for charity.
Well, it is right for Christians to do good works.
I’m not sure if they were all Christians… some don’t have anything to do with church normally. All they seemed interested in was the amount they were collecting.
Why do you think they were doing the work?
Well… some said this ought to keep them right with God. Will it?
A lot of people think they can get right with God by doing good works, but God says in His word the Bible that we are saved by grace…
What is grace?
God’s unmerited favour… a free gift… something that cannot be earned. The Bible says, by grace we are saved through faith, and not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works so that no one can boast. We were all separated from God due to our sin. God gave His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sin – now all we have to do is have faith and believe on Him.
OK… so it’s a gift from God that we can’t earn. We just have to have faith and believe God’s Son Jesus Christ died for our sin… But what about doing a few good works… to please God first… and let Him know we’re OK?
We’re not OK! That’s the whole point, we’re sinners! So, not even a few good works will help. Trying to work our way to God is an offence to Him as the work is already done.
So it doesn’t matter what we do, we can’t work our way into God’s favour?
No. Everyone, no matter how important they think they are, must first admit that they are a helpless sinner, then trust completely in Jesus Christ as their Saviour.
That might be a problem to some who don’t think they’re that bad?
If we could get right with God by ourselves – Why did Jesus Christ have to die?
